In the Beginning There Was A Move...

I have lived next to a park for the last two years, which has been my saving grace as
it was a difficult transitional time for my family and me as we moved from a 4 bd.rm.
town house into my daughter ‘s and her families’ home while deciding next steps.
Shedding layers of not only things of which I had too much but on a personal level as
well as I agonized and stressed over what I could keep, should keep, and how to
dispose of treasures I have collected for many years.
It is much a revelation as it is cathartic as the understanding of just how much I had
accumulated verses how much I could keep or need, all the while hearing from my
grown up off spring that it was only treasure to me, and they would be happy to hire
a dumpster to help expedite the process.
I have found that there is indeed truth to the adage; one person’s treasure is another
person’s trash! Yes I have seen the show hoarders and it became my measuring
stick of collecting vs hoarding. Well, I suppose it is in the eye of beholder as I have
been told more often than not I have so many beautiful and interesting things not
only by adults but children as well who told me they loved coming over to look at
and hear about the things I had displayed. Conversely the minimalistic generation,
of which my children are a part, would rather view things on line or in a museum
not in their living space.
As D-Day of moving approached I gave any thousands of books to friends, donated
to the Native American Cultural Center in Baltimore, Blacks in Wax Museum in
Baltimore, Weyenoke in Hampton, Va. and more. I gave not only books also antique
furniture, art, and even hand made dresses of my grandmothers and accessories.
I felt good these items were going to good homes, which lessened my anxiety and
soon became a relief as well.
Moving into a small apartment would be a major adjustment for me as I felt boxed in
and unable to breath. When I got over the initial shock, I looked over at the woods
next to me. I walked through the parking lot and stood at one of several entrances
to the wooded areas and became still. I looked at the trees that in turn looked in me
and I said, Help! At first I didn’t sense anything as I began to uncoil from the tightly
curled up energy I had become. I just walked the path that circled the playing field
and playground as I looked at the trees and plants. This became my every day early
morning routine at 5 am when the path was quiet, just before the walkers, runners
and dogs took their owners for a walk.
After a couple of weeks I began to notice the varied types of plant life which grew in
harmony with each other, the colors, smells, sizes and the trees that stood so
patiently and their beautifully diverse types of which had become more pronounced.
I began to touch them and to talk to them as I opened to make a deeper connection
to the ones who invited me to do so. I took my cell phone with me to assuage the
fear from family and friends who couldn’t trust my being alone in the trees at that
hour or probably any hour. I do know there are dangers out there and take
precautions as best as I can and yet I had come to understand that I was being
looked after by trees and others who have welcomed me in.
